Delayed planting, caused by late harvest and wet fields, and lower prices contributed to a reduction in acres of wheat planted in the fall of 2008. Acres planted were estimated to be 850,000, a 29 percent reduction from the 1,200,000 acres in the fall of 2007.
Spring of 2009 was not conducive to high wheat yields and quality. A fifth wettest spring in a hundred years of weather records affected wheat growth and nitrogen availability. Especially in southern Illinois, severe leaf and head diseases contributed to low test weights and incidences of vomitoxin that resulted in significant price discounts.
In spite of the severe weather related problems, the yield average for Illinois was estimated to be 59 bushels per acre compared to 64 bushels in 2008.
On the following pages are the ‘productivity indexes’ for varieties in performance trials in Illinois, Kentucky and Missouri for the period of 2006-2009. The index system compares yield results on the basis of percentage of yield rather than bushels as an easier way to evaluate one variety against another. A score of 100 is the average for all varieties. Use the information only as a guide. Seek additional references as a way to learn more about a variety. If you have a computer, search for the university trials in Illinois and surrounding states.
In this report, the greater the number of trial locations for a variety and the greater the number of years on test, the more reliable the information.
We thank Dr. Emerson Nafziger, University of Illinois; Dr. Anne McKendy, University of Missouri; and Bill Bruening, University of Kentucky for the data from the university performance trials. Dennis Epplin provided the results from a single-strip plot at the Ewing Demonstration Center, Franklin County.
